Can Just One Meal High in Sugar & Fat Really Harm You

hot-fudge-sundae.jpgDo sugar and fat together at one meal harm you?  My blog pal, Connie Bennett on her Sugar Shock blog in a post titled "Just One High-Sugar, High-Fat Meal Can Damage Your Body, Study Stays" cited evidence that fat and sugar eaten together at one meal can be disastrous:

New research in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology finds that just one high-sugar, high fat meal immediately triggers inflammation in blood vessels, an increase in blood pressure and even harmful changes to the nervous system.

High protein, low carb is great for some but there are people who do well(I assume) on high carbs-low glycemic. I have a friend who eats mostly carbs and when I complain that she's not eating enough protein, she says "there's protein in the veggies" which always drives me crazy.

Now my other blog pal, Jimmy Moore on his blog, Livin' La Vida Low-Carb disagreed with Connie's post and said:

Say it ain't so, Connie! I'll agree that a "culprit-carb-laden meal" may chesseburger.jpgcause harm, but what's with the "fatty" part? Why even go there when you have seen all the studies in research for your SUGAR SHOCK! book showing a high-fat, low-carb diet is not only healthy, but beneficial in so many ways to the body. In fact, you should take a closer look at the book by Gary Taubes (who you interviewed recently) called Good Calories, Bad Calories to find out more of the science behind this.

Each person has to find what works best for them.  I myself have had to 'trial & error' often to check what I'm reacting to that seemed good for me in the past.

Does the latest research from the scientific community on high-carb diet causing all sorts of health complications take into consideration the fact that people who eat a high-carb diet might be eating ONLY LOW GLYCEMIC CARBS(if they're health/nutrition savvy)?

We should have moderate protein at each meal-I totally agree with Jimmy and Connie on this. When I eat an apple or any fruit, I think what protein and fat(usually nuts) can I eat soon after so my blood sugar won't spike.

I usually try to plan my meals around The Zone but keep whatever carbs I include low glycemic. I have a difficult time with rice cakes because they happen to be a favorite of mine. I know they're high glycemic so I always add protein and nuts.

In the end, meditation, yoga and qigong round out my healthy life style. Even if my diet is strictly 'healthy' and I miss these, I can crash quickly.
